Drought in England: where’s all the water gone?

On 5th April a hosepipe, or temporary use, ban came into force across southern and eastern England, and it is estimated that 20 million customers have been affected (http://goo.gl/WKp1F).

In his lesson ideas, geography teacher Tony Cassidy suggests how the ban can be used to develop students’ understanding of weather and climate, and how a prolonged period of drought can influence our everyday life.

Does life exist beneath the ice sheet of Antarctica?

'Antarctica is an extreme environment: the climate and landscape provide a challenge to life, particularly to humans who study this largely untouched wilderness. Recently there has been media interest in exploration of the continent, focussing on the possibility of life within the sub-glacial lakes.'

To help your geography students understand the significance of the discovery of a sub-glacial lake at Vostok, Antarctica, geography teacher Tony Cassidy shares his ideas for teaching about sub-glacial lakes.

Sustainable Development lesson plan: KS3 Geography

“Sustainability is a key geographical concept in all key stages. It is always topical, and gives students an opportunity to address big issues that affect them, their future children and their grandchildren.”

After starting with the basics of what natural resources are, geography teacher Stephen Schwab’s lesson then engages students in current geographical debate.

Considering sustainable development from local, national and global perspectives, students are invited to question how a world with a population that has now reached seven billion can hope to remain sustainable.
