The World at Seven Billion – Lesson Ideas

To celebrate World Population Day on 11th July, we’ve re-posted Tony Cassidy’s teaching ideas on the world at seven billion as a printable document.

Linking to useful articles and videos, the activities will help students to think through the answers to such questions as:

  • Why the population is growing?
  • What is the potential impact of such population growth on the environment?
  • How has the speed of population growth changed over time?
  • What factors have affected the relationship between birth and death rates?

Customer Service Skills activity

With the recent news that the tour operator Thomas Cook’s UK summer package holiday bookings have fallen by nearly 33% in the two weeks to 13th January, it is more important than ever for tour operators to keep existing customers on board through high-quality customer service.

To help assess your students’ knowledge of customer service skills, Boardworks BTEC First Travel & Tourism is packed with engaging summary activities, like this amusement arcade-style ‘grab it!’ activity, taken from our ‘Developing Customer Service Skills in Travel and Tourism’ presentation.

In this activity, two teams of students compete against each other to see who can collect the most prizes. To collect the prizes, they must answer correctly questions on the correct way to behave in a variety of different customer service scenarios.

This colourful, audio-visual activity can be used to test students’ knowledge of key customer service skills such as dealing with complaints and when best to use a formal/non-formal approach.

National Parks: Travel & Tourism/Geography resources

More and more people are choosing to take their holidays in the UK, rather than travelling overseas. As a result, a relatively new staycation industry has opened up in the UK, catering for those who want to holiday at home.

We’ve created some free resources, suitable for both Geography and Travel & Tourism lessons, that are ideal for exploring this topic with your students.

• An interactive map shows the locations of the UK’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks and forests.
• A case study of Northumberland National Park provides a focus for study.
• An assignment provides a useful homework task or class activity, which gets all students involved.

World Holiday Destinations Lesson Plan

When teaching learners about worldwide travel destinations, its important that information is presented to them in a relevant way that draws on industry-specific anecdotes to which they can relate.

Mary Diamond, a teacher of Level 2 and Level 3 BTEC Travel & Tourism, has kindly provided us with a great lesson plan to offer BTEC learners an interactive and engaging session on the topic of European Holiday Destinations, which you can download for free!
