The impact of product design on the environment is becoming more and more important in design and technology, and a number of new products are being developed with sustainability at the centre of the design brief.

In 2009, Laurence Kemball-Cook developed one such product – a paving slab which harvests energy from people’s footsteps, and can be used to power a wide range of applications. His company, Pavegen, now has their paving slabs in place in one of Europe’s largest shopping centres, as well as having secured a contract for the 2012 Olympics site in London.

We’ve produced some free resources which profile Pavegen paving slabs. Guiding students through how to write a design brief, a series of questions also accompany the Pavegen case study and get students thinking about how to address the increasing need for sustainability in their own design briefs.

Last week, we gave away some free resources which encouraged your students to carry out their own product analysis, taking into account a number of fundamental design principles, including materials and their properties.

To introduce your students to a variety of different materials and their properties, Boardworks D&T contains a range of activities such as this animated introduction to waterproof fabrics, taken from our KS3 D&T ‘Modern Textiles Material’ presentation.

Successful product analysis is essential when designing new products and improving old ones. It allows us to understand the decisions that have gone into the design of a product, and this in turn can help us when it comes to making these decisions for ourselves.

To introduce students to the questions that they should be asking when carrying out a product analysis, we’ve put together some free resources for use with your KS4 students.

Featuring an interactive activity that helps students consider whether form or function is more important for certain products, students are then they are encouraged to carry out their own product analysis, taking into account a number of important ‘design principles’.
