Leadership in sport activities
Lecturer in Sport, Nigel Wright, shares some ideas for teaching Leadership in Sport
The performance of the English national teams in the South Africa 2010 Football World Cup and the New Zealand 2011 Rugby World Cup was extremely disappointing. Both teams showed flashes of great promise in the run up to the competition, but then failed to live up to expectations during the respective tournaments. The football team looked like they didn’t want to play and went out 4-1 to Germany in the second round. The rugby team was in the news for inappropriate conduct off the pitch, and were dispatched 19-12 by France in the Quarter Finals.
The performance of the teams under the management of Martin Johnson (Rugby) and Fabio Capello (Football) has been rocky throughout both managers’ reigns. Following widespread criticism of his team’s performances on and off the pitch, Martin Johnson resigned on 16th November 2011. Fabio Capello soon followed on 8th February 2012, resigning as a result of a dispute with the Football Association after John Terry was stripped of the team captaincy. Were these unsuccessful team performances down to the players not being good enough, or were they a failure in the ‘leadership’ of their managers? These current events are a great opportunity to teach about leadership in sport.
Here are five ideas that you might wish to consider when teaching about leadership in sport.

One of Nigel’s activity ideas involves researching the media image of Johnson and Capello. With a presentation entitled ‘Social, Cultural and Media Influences’, Boardworks KS4 PE helps your students understand the role of the media in sport. To find out more, order your free sample disc today!

Performance Analysis lesson plan: KS4 PE
'Students will learn how to observe the performances of others or themselves. By being able to identify strengths or weaknesses in the performances, this will lead to students giving appropriate feedback (qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis).’
Analysing performance in the classroom can be tricky. Help your students develop this skill while off the pitch as well as on it by using PE teacher Claire Stearn’s performance analysis lesson plan.
Using a range of techniques to help students analyse performance, including class Q&A, discussions, video clips and a downloadable worksheet, Claire’s lesson uses the Boardworks KS4 PE ‘Performance Analysis’ presentation to help students understand the key aspects of performance analysis.

‘I like using the exam-style questions at the end, which are great to set for homework.’ Danielle Griffiths, Fernhill School & Language College, Farnborough. Cardiovascular System plenary activity: KS4 PE
During a long, theoretical lesson, it can be difficult to maintain student interest, especially in the final 10 minutes when trying to summarise your lesson for a group of increasingly restless students.
To help maintain student interest right up until the bell goes, Boardworks KS4 PE contains a variety of plenary activities, like this interactive quiz taken from our KS4 PE ‘Cardiovascular System’ presentation.
In this interactive activity, students select an answer to each question until all the answers have disappeared. Visually engaging and mentally stimulating, this activity can be used to test students’ knowledge of the cardiovascular system. By splitting your class into teams, you can introduce an element of competition that ensures your students get the very most from their theory lessons.
Did you know that Boardworks KS4 PE also contains video footage of athletes in action? These informative video clips help students see theory in action and allow you to demonstrate important concepts with ease. To find out more, why not order your free sample disc?
