Careers with languages poster
The recent CfBT Education Trust report into ‘The economic case for language learning and the role of employer engagement’ has highlighted the negative economic impact of the ongoing decline of new graduates with adequate language-learning skills.
To help inspire your students in their language learning, we’ve created a ‘Careers with languages’ poster.
Put the poster up in your classroom to show students the range of careers their language skills could open up for them, from video games translator to geoscientist.

If you also teach PSHEE and careers, did you know that we publish MyWorks, an online product that provides ready-made, self-marking quizzes? It’s perfect for non-specialist teachers! Find out more here: www.myworks.co.uk/pshee

MFL core skills activity
At the heart of MFL studies lie the four key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Depending on their individual learning style, different students will find different combinations of the four skills easier to master than others.
With this in mind, Boardworks MFL resources for French, German and Spanish aim to teach the four skills in a variety of different ways throughout each presentation.
Take this listening activity on furniture and bedrooms, which features:
- Several audio clips to engage auditory learners and to help all students practice their listening skills.
- A kinaesthetic drag-and-drop activity which helps to maintain the interest of kinaesthetic learners.
- A transcript of all audio clips appears in the full product and can be displayed for visual learners, or to develop reading and speaking skills for other students.
To try out the activity, click the 'anfangen' button.
To help encourage students to practise new vocabulary, all Boardworks MFL resources feature visual stimuli and open-ended activities which you can extend into whole-class speaking activities. To find out more about the range of activities on offer, order your free sample disc today!

Environment lesson plan: KS4 Spanish
‘The purpose of this lesson is to enable learners to develop their reading and comprehension skills in relation to the topic ‘El medio ambiente’, including understanding unfamiliar language and idiomatic usage found in authentic texts.’
In a highly interactive lesson plan, MFL teacher Terry Atkinson shows how social networking sites can be a valuable teaching resource. The lesson begins with a grammar element – the study of modal verbs – before encouraging students to learn independently and increase their vocabulary by using Twitter.
Incorporating individual study, group work, and whole class interaction, Terry’s innovative approach to the topic ‘El medio ambiente’ also allows students to develop the key skills of reading, writing and speaking.

Extension Material: free GCSE French resources
What’s you favourite ad?
Cadbury’s viral marketing hit, the drum-playing gorilla?
Ikea’s playfight before bed TV ad?
Louis Vuitton’s luxurious magazine ads?
Ads tend to split opinion, making them great discussion-starters. With this in mind, we’ve produced some free resources on advertising for you to use with your higher-level students, encouraging them to use higher-level vocabulary more spontaneously.
These resources include:
- a verb activity with original artwork to illustrate different types of ad campaign and the verbs they use
- a research and writing activity investigating internet ad campaigns, challenging students to use newly-acquired vocabulary
- an accompanying worksheet which expands on the PowerPoint material.
